Welcome to the Seatlle Family Lawyer Site

When I first registered this domain name it was after a law firm based in Seattle called Diamond, Burt & Akhkashian did not renew it. I'm assuming their lawfirm ceased business or something. Whatever the reason may have been -- I have decided that this domain name will now be used to give you, my valued reader, good and trustworthy information on family law and the art of finding family lawyers.

What are Family Lawyers?

Family lawyers are legal specialists who deal with family situations and relationships. Some of the circumstances that involve family lawyers are divorce, financial settlements, child custody, visitation, spousal or child abuse, adoption, paternity suits, trust funds, wills and prenuptial agreements. Laws vary from state to state and each lawyer must interpret that law to the benefit of his/her client.

A family lawyer may have children, women or men as his/her clients. Normally under most family legal circumstances, the same lawyer would not represent both the man and the woman unless of course, it was an adoption case. The lawyer's primary focus is to ensure the client's rights are protected and that the client is dealt with in a fair and equitable fashion under the law. Minor children may not have anyone other than the lawyer to protect their interests so the family lawyer must understand the situation and fight accordingly.

Family lawyers may have their own private practices, may be part of a larger legal firm or may even work based on court decisions as in the case of a court-appointed attorney. In spousal and child abuse situations, they may be called to work during the night. Some women's and children's shelters have regular attorneys who work on behalf of the women staying in the shelter.

Some of the duties included in a family lawyer's job description might be mediation and negotiation, filing court documents, attending court hearings, advising clients on the best path available, directing a client to agencies and other support services, and meeting with other lawyers to resolve issues.

Family lawyers may work in a broad arena accepting varied cases or they may specialize in a field such as divorce and property settlement. Some family lawyers may never go to court on behalf of a client but rather may focus on areas which are more administrative in nature such as the establishment of trust funds, power of attorney documents, wills, estate planning and prenuptial agreements.

In regards to payment structures, family lawyers work in several different manners. Depending on the severity of a case and the person being represented, the lawyer may do "pro bono" work, the lawyer may also accept legal aid cases and then retainer or full payment up front would be another type of arrangement.

Family law encompasses many aspects of life and each lawyer within the field must be properly educated and certified.
